FALSE ALARM REDUCTION UNIT

The City of Roswell has adopted City Ordinance Article X Section 132 to govern burglary, panic, duress and robbery alarm systems.  The purpose of the ordinance is to encourage alarm users to properly maintain the alarm systems and to reduce false alarms, which divert the police from being available to respond to criminal activity.

The Roswell Alarm Administration office is located at 426 North Main.  You may contact the Alarms Administrator by calling 575-622-7233 or 575-420-1369.

You must instruct your alarm company to utilize ENHANCED CALL VERIFCATION on burglar alarm activations.  This is a requirement that the monitoring company attempt to call you on at least two telephone numbers, if available, BEFORE they dispatch the police.  ENHANCED CALL VERIFICATION does not apply to panic, hold-up or other user-activated alarms

DO I NEED A PERMIT?

Yes, the Alarm Ordinance requires a permit for the alarm user to operate an alarm system and to request for a police officer to be dispatched to the alarm site to investigate an alarm activation. The alarm user will be fined $50.00 for every false alarm without a permit.  Contact the Alarms Administration Office to obtain a permit.

WHAT IS A FALSE ALARM?

A false alarm is a burglar, panic, duress or robbery alarm activation investigated by the police where the responding officer finds no evidence of a criminal offense or other emergency.

IF I CANCEL THE POLICE, AM I STILL CHARGED WITH A FALSE ALARM?

No, you are not charged with a false alarm, but only if the police receive the cancellation BEFORE they arrive at the alarm site.  Enhanced Call Verification can give you the opportunity to cancel the police before they are dispatched to your alarm site.

HOW DO I CANCEL THE POLICE?

Contact your alarm monitoring service and provide them with your cancellation password.  DO NOT CALL 911 OR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO CANCEL AN ALARM!  The Roswell Police Department will not cancel the officer unless the cancellation is received from the Alarm Monitoring Company.

DO I NEED TO REGISTER MY CAR OR FIRE ALARM?

No, the Alarm Ordinance does not apply to car or fire alarms.

MY ALARM IS NOT MONITORED.  DO I STILL NEED A PERMIT?

Yes, the Alarms Ordinance applies to monitored or local (unmonitored) alarm systems.

CAN I APPEAL A SUSPENSION, FINE OR FALSE ALARM CLASSIFCATION?

Yes, the City of Roswell has in place an Appeal Process available to Alarm Users, Alarm Companies, and Alarm Monitoring Services.  Refer to the attached Roswell City Ordinance.
